In the past decade, the volume of global network connections has exploded as the number of Internet users has in turn surged to 3.8 billion globally – more than half the world’s population.

People Expect More

Operators have driven the large-scale proliferation of broadband services. ITU data shows that 1.49 billion households worldwide have access to fixed broadband networks and penetration is close to 55 percent. Today, people are no longer content with basic connectivity services: 5G has raised expectations for mobile video download speeds; home users expect high-quality broadband connectivity and services like UHD video, cloud VR, online offices, online gaming, and online education; and vertical industries now realize the value of connectivity and ICT as the core of digital transformation.

However, the fixed broadband industry still has some way to go and while the home user experience needs to be improved, problems persist: Extensive copper wire resources cannot support continual increases to bandwidth, the cost of fiber deployment is high, and the fixed broadband industry as a whole is fragmented, limiting its development.

A Golden Decade for Fiber

Driven by 10G PON and Wi-Fi 6, we believe that F5G will open the door to a golden decade for the fixed broadband industry. To enhance the benefits that 5G has brought to mobile networks, ETSI set up the F5G Industry Specification Group to focus on evolving fiber so that it can be deployed in multiple scenarios. Huawei will work with the industry chain to build a sustainable fixed broadband industry ecosystem and accelerate the coordinated development of F5G and 5G. We will promote the innovation of scenario-based solutions to help operators shift from copper wire to optical fiber at optimal cost, and strengthen the physical bearer network to support continuous network evolution over the next 10 years.

We will introduce technologies like AI to guarantee end-to-end service experience and provide high-quality access services for all industries. And we will unite the industry chain to promote the unification of international F5G standards and establish an ecosystem that ensures industry prosperity.

We believe that the business value that fiber broadband network resources will create will multiply by several times. Huawei hopes to join forces with the industry chain and embrace strategic opportunities in the F5G era to realize ubiquitous optical connectivity, guarantee a high-quality experience, and bring digital to every person, home and organization to build a fully connected, intelligent world.
