The Tool CIOs Need for Digital Transformation
Over the past few weeks and months, I’ve had the privilege of speaking to CIOs from various companies. From my conversations, I’ve found that the problem is almost the same everywhere: implementing change is incredibly difficult. Today I am introducing a toolkit for helping organizations to successfully master digital transformation.
There are essentially two areas of importance for transformation. One is the organization and the other is technology.
A Tale of Two Teams
In terms of organization, change goes far beyond the IT department. Not only does IT have to say goodbye to conventional silo structures, but other departments must also be introduced to new possibilities. One team shows what is possible, for example, with big data, IoT, and AI; the other team shows where these technologies can best be used to create value. That means that the know-how of both sides has to be merged. All you need to achieve this is suitable IT staff. But that’s easier said than done, since it depends on the job market, and many companies have the same requirements. So, here we have the first problem:
Q: How do I find IT staff to drive digital transformation?
The second domain that needs to be changed is technology. The focus here is clearly on agility. We do not know today what requirements we will have tomorrow. A current example is the relocation of workplaces to the home office.

How easy would it be with an agile infrastructure to start up 1,000 or 10,000 virtual desktops? Or to provide a department with a complete solution stack for artificial intelligence within minutes? That brings us to the second problem:
Q: How do I build an agile infrastructure in the short term?
In short, we need IT specialists and a flexible infrastructure. Two solution models are currently being used for this. Some try to introduce agile methods. This means that changes are made to the organization that break up the static structures. There is hope that this agility will also be carried over to the infrastructure. It will take a few years to see whether this is the best approach. I suspect that it will take too long and won’t lead to finding more staff.
Others have been trying to move data and services to the public cloud for years. There are concerns among IT staff, and the changeover is taking place correspondingly slowly. In addition, there are significant data protection contradictions, see CLOUD Act. Even full encryption cannot help. When processing data, you have to provide the key and put it back in the cloud.

Q: What if you could bring a complete and agile cloud solution into your own data center?
I’m not talking about limited cloud services here, but a tried-and-tested copy of a cloud solution that has been used a million times.
Let’s take a look at the CIO tool.

In one fell swoop, the self-service portal shown above gives you access to over 50 fully automated services in your own data center.
