The annual GSMA GLOMO awards at MWC Barcelona recognize the outstanding contributions of organizations that change how people, communities, and businesses interact and evolve in a digital-first world.

This year Huawei took home five awards with a rich variety of projects and solutions spanning cutting-edge 5G, sustainability, digital inclusion, and healthcare

So let’s take a look at the winners!

    1. TECH4ALL DigiTruck, Kenya

What it is: A converted, used shipping container that serves as a mobile classroom for providing training in digital skills for remote and rural communities. Equipped with 20 workstations, computers, tablets, smartphones, and an Internet connection via Huawei’s Fixed Wireless Access solution, the equipment is all fully solar-powered, so that communities that lack a power supply can also benefit.

Each 40-hour course covers basic digital literacy skills, including how to use smartphones, the Internet, email, and office software. As well as providing guidance on e-waste management, the training also covers a range of essential soft skills such as drafting business documents, searching for jobs online, and starting an online business.

    DigiTruck trainees in Kenya

Why it won: Since rollout in 2019, more than 2,300 students have received over 80,000 hours of training across 19 counties in Kenya. The program contributes significantly to SDG4: ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. Initiatives such as DigiTruck can also work towards achieving other SDGs, including ending poverty and gender equality. Improved digital skills are essential to improving employment prospects for job seekers and empowering low-income communities with online business models – skills that can in turn help lift people out of poverty.

While the majority of programs aim for an equal ratio of male and female trainees, courses are also available for specifically for girls and women, for whom a lack of digital skills tends to be more acute. In 2021 and in partnership with Women in Technology Huawei, DigiTruck provided training for 55 women in the remote sub county of Garbatulla.

The project is run under the education domain, Tech4Education, of Huawei’s digital inclusion initiative TECH4ALL.

    2. Green 5G

What it is: To help meet China’s carbon neutrality goals, China Mobile and Huawei introduced various measures to reduce the energy consumption of mobile networks and bring 5G and other ICT solutions in various vertical industries.

    Why it won:

    • Product innovation: To meet increasing traffic demand, the partners launched several green base station products to boost 5G energy efficiency. MetaAAU uses the extremely large antenna array (ELAA) technology and high-efficiency antennas for signal direct injection feeding (SDIF) to optimize network performance and save energy. Multi-band RRUs using ultra-wideband technology help operators add frequencies to incumbent sites without increasing power consumption. The APM product uses solar energy, so that sites don’t need air conditioners or equipment rooms. And intelligent wireless networks and base stations create dynamic energy-saving policies in all 5G scenarios.
    • Industry collaboration: China Mobile and Huawei established a Green 5G Innovation Lab in collaboration with other industry partners, developed the multi-dimensional energy efficiency proposal, and built a new standard for measuring network energy efficiency.
    • Green society: 5G has contributed to reducing carbon emissions by up to 800 million tons in more than 100 industries, including electricity, steel, manufacturing, mining, ports, hospitals, and banking.

    3. New FDD Giga Band MIMO Modules

What it is: The series is the first of its kind to support low and mid-band Sub-3 GHz frequencies in one radio box while implementing 4T4R, 8T8R, and Massive MIMO. The solution is equipped with industry leading software algorithms such as PIM Cancellation, SingleCell, and PowerBoosting.

    5G Massive MIMO

Why it won: The small and lightweight design of the modules make onsite engineering easier and the unique power-sharing technology reduces power consumption by 30%. Operators can flexibly adapt the solution to suit a diverse range of deployment scenarios, while meeting requirements for capacity, experience, and coverage in residential, suburban, and railway scenarios. As well as 4G, the solution supports fast and simplified 5G deployment to enable a cross-generational experience.

What the judges said: Huawei’s FDD Gigaband helps operators reduce CAPEX and OPEX through multi-band integration, and will support spectrum and technology evolution well for years to come. It has been deployed on a large scale globally and has huge market potential. It sets out the direction towards which the industry is heading in 5G-oriented Sub-3 GHz evolution.

    4. 5G Smart Healthcare Lights up Hainan Healthy Island

What it is: The project combines 5GCtoB One Telco Cloud 5G slicing and MEC network capabilities with smart healthcare to enable diagnosis, monitoring, and emergency medicine services at primary health centers.

Why it won: The project is currently the largest 5G commercial application project in China and the first provincial 5G-based remote diagnosis project in which all primary healthcare institutions are digitalized.

In addition to provisioning medical services like pre-hospital emergency medicine, remote consultation, and smart diagnosis, Hainan’s primary medical capabilities have comprehensively improved. All residents have access to high quality medical services and treatment time is on average 3 to 5 hours shorter, with a 30% improvement in efficiency.

    5. 5G Capital

What it is: Designed to inspires other cities around the world to achieve more with 5G, the two partners have been working together since 2020 to promote 5G development, build 5G gigabit networks in Beijing, and fully utilize 5G to create value for industries and society.

Why it won: China Unicom Beijing and Huawei have made four breakthroughs in untapped areas of 5G:

    1. The partners developed four categories of standards for user-centric 5G network evaluation, which later became the most critical input for network optimization.
    2. They achieved multiple industry milestones for scaled commercial deployment, with 10 innovations including the first extensive deployment of 200 MHz, Super Uplink, and indoor distributed Massive MIMO in China.
    3. China Unicom Beijing was the first operator to provide cloud gaming and network slicing services for ToC users and to launch ToB slicing services.
    4. The operator has built a CT-IT integrated digital capability base to implement a series of advanced functions, such as end-to-end network operation and service analysis, cloud-network convergence, and visualized service subscription.
