How Turkcell Is Accelerating the Construction of Its Future-Proof Net5.5G 400GE Ultra-Stable IP Backbone

    At Net5.5G Intelligent IP Network Summit in UBBF 2024, Turkcell IP/MPLS and Data Center Networks Associate Director, Mehmet Durmus, delivered the speech, "Building a Future Proof Net5.5G IP Backbone".

    He shared Turkcell’s experience in constructing a Net5.5G-oriented backbone network in terms of ultra-broadband, high reliability, and intelligence. 400GE can cope with continuous traffic growth and provide a reliable backbone architecture at three levels - architecture, link, and node - which can handle emergency network scenarios. At the same time, Huawei’s network digital map is used to implement service visualization and automatic optimization, ensuring optimal service experience.

    With the rapid development of mobile, home broadband, and B2B services, Turkcell's traffic increases correspondingly. Mehmet Durmus said that building an ultra-broadband IP backbone network is a prerequisite for a stable network, and that rapid traffic growth brings opportunities to deploy 400GE links. Turkcell has already deployed 400GE, which saves 75% of fiber resources and improves link bandwidth utilization. 800GE, as a future step, is POC testing. 

    Reliability is a key element of the IP backbone network. Ensuring 99.999% reliability of the IP backbone network is a key problem for Turkcell. Mehmet Durmus analyzed the key factors of backbone network design from architecture level, link level to node level. Turkcell has built a highly reliable IP backbone network,  including Huawei’s NetEngine 8000 X series routers. By using dual-plane architecture, rich features of reliable links, and highly reliable and resilient NetEngine 8000 X routers, Turkcell's IP backbone network ensures service stability and reliability.

    In terms of automation, Turkcell is looking to build an intelligent network by using Huawei's network digital map to implement visualized and manageable services. E2E SRv6 and network digital map can implement network-wide automation and programmability. Turkcell has successfully achieved SRv6 service implementation between Turkcell’s two data centers. Service path optimization by SRv6 is provided to solve the problem of link congestion or unavailability. Intelligent "brains" are installed on backbone networks, greatly improving O&M efficiency.

    Turkcell will continue to implement the concept of Net5.5G-oriented network construction, implement commercial deployment of key technologies on target networks, and help realize the vision of superior digital services for a better future".
